How to Read a Diamond Certificate
A diamond certificate is the most important document in any diamond purchase. It is the independent proof that the stone you are buying is what it is represented to be — and knowing how to read it means you can verify that claim yourself, without relying on anyone else’s interpretation.
A diamond grading report from GIA or IGI is your independent proof that the stone is what it is represented to be — graded by a laboratory with no stake in the sale.
What a Diamond Certificate Is — and What It Isn’t
A diamond grading report is issued by an independent gemological laboratory — most commonly IGI (International Gemological Institute) or GIA (Gemological Institute of America). The lab receives the stone, evaluates it across standardized criteria, and produces a document recording those grades. The certificate does not come from the retailer selling you the stone. That independence is the point.
What a certificate does not tell you is whether a stone is beautiful, whether it faces up well, or whether it is the right stone for your situation. It tells you what a trained gemologist measured. Understanding the difference between those two things is what separates a confident buyer from one who relies entirely on whoever is selling them the stone.

The Fields That Matter Most
Cut Grade
Cut is the single most important factor in how a diamond looks. It is not about the shape of the stone — round, oval, cushion — but about how precisely the facets are proportioned and aligned to maximize light return. A well-cut diamond returns light efficiently. A poorly cut one leaks it.
For round brilliant diamonds, IGI and GIA both issue a formal cut grade: Excellent, Very Good, Good, Fair, or Poor. Excellent is the standard to look for. Very Good is acceptable. Good and below will face up noticeably duller and is generally not worth the trade-off regardless of how strong the color and clarity grades are.
For fancy shapes — oval, cushion, emerald, pear — no formal cut grade is issued. You have to evaluate proportions manually or rely on someone who can interpret them. This is one of the reasons fancy shapes require more care when selecting from a certificate alone.
Color Grade
Diamond color is graded on a scale from D (completely colorless) to Z (visibly yellow or brown tint). The scale is counterintuitive — lower letters mean more color, which in white diamonds is considered a deficiency. D, E, and F are colorless. G, H, I, and J are near-colorless and represent the sweet spot for most buyers — the color difference from a D is invisible to the naked eye in a set stone, but the price difference is significant.
For lab grown diamonds specifically, D–H represents the range where color is effectively invisible in everyday wear. Chasing D or E color in a lab grown stone rarely makes visual sense unless the setting specifically calls for it.
Knowing how to read a certificate means you can verify what you are buying yourself — without relying on anyone else’s interpretation.
Clarity Grade
Clarity describes the presence and visibility of internal characteristics (inclusions) and surface characteristics (blemishes). The scale runs from FL (Flawless) through IF, VVS1/VVS2, VS1/VS2, SI1/SI2, down to I1/I2/I3 (visible inclusions).
VS2 and above is the practical benchmark for most buyers — inclusions are not visible to the naked eye and have no impact on the appearance or durability of the stone. SI1 can be eye-clean depending on the location and nature of the inclusion, but requires verification. SI2 and below frequently shows visible inclusions without magnification.
The certificate’s plotting diagram — the circular diagram showing the table view and pavilion view of the stone with symbols marking inclusions — tells you where the inclusions are located. Inclusions near the center of the table are more visible than those near the girdle or hidden under prongs. Location matters as much as grade.
Carat Weight
Carat is a unit of weight, not size. One carat equals 0.2 grams. Two diamonds at the same carat weight can look dramatically different in diameter depending on their cut proportions — a well-cut stone will appear larger than a poorly cut one at the same weight, because it is not hiding weight in a deep pavilion.
The certificate lists carat weight to two decimal places. It also lists the stone’s measurements in millimeters. For round brilliants, diameter is a more reliable indicator of how the stone will look on the hand than carat weight alone. A 1.5-carat round brilliant with ideal proportions will face up larger than a 1.6-carat stone with a deep cut.
Fluorescence
Fluorescence describes how a diamond reacts to ultraviolet light. Many diamonds emit a blue glow under UV — this is neither good nor bad by default, but it has implications depending on the color grade.
In D–F color stones, medium or strong blue fluorescence can occasionally make the stone appear slightly hazy or oily in daylight, which contains UV. In G–J color stones, faint to medium fluorescence is generally neutral or even slightly beneficial — it can make the stone appear whiter in some lighting conditions. Strong fluorescence in any color grade warrants a closer look at the specific stone.
Fluorescence is listed on the certificate as None, Faint, Medium, Strong, or Very Strong. It is worth checking and worth understanding before you buy.
The Fields Most Buyers Skip — and Shouldn’t
Laser Inscription
Every IGI and GIA certified diamond has its report number laser-inscribed on the girdle — the thin band around the widest part of the stone. This inscription is invisible to the naked eye but readable under magnification.
Before purchasing, verify that the number on the certificate matches the inscription on the stone. This is the only way to confirm the certificate describes the specific stone in front of you and not a different stone with similar specifications. A reputable seller will show you this without being asked. If they hesitate, that tells you something.
Growth Method (Lab Grown Only)
IGI certificates for lab grown diamonds specify the growth method: CVD (Chemical Vapor Deposition) or HPHT (High Pressure High Temperature). Both produce real diamonds. CVD is more common in the lab grown market. HPHT tends to produce higher color grades more readily.
Neither method produces an inferior stone. But knowing which process created your diamond is part of understanding what you purchased, and it should be on the certificate. If it is not, ask.
Post-Growth Treatment
Some lab grown diamonds undergo post-growth treatment to improve color. IGI will note this on the certificate. If a stone shows an unusually high color grade relative to its price point, this field is worth checking. Treatment is not inherently a problem — but it should be disclosed, and a certificate that notes treatment is more trustworthy than one that is silent on it.
Your Pre-Purchase Certificate Checklist
- Cut grade is Excellent or Very Good (round brilliants). For fancy shapes, evaluate proportions directly.
- Color grade is D–H for most buyers. Going below J introduces visible warmth in white metal settings.
- Clarity is VS2 or above as a starting point. SI1 requires verification of the plotting diagram.
- Fluorescence is noted and you understand the implications for the color grade of your stone.
- Laser inscription matches the report number on the certificate.
- Growth method is listed (for lab grown diamonds). CVD or HPHT, both fine — just confirm it is stated.
- Post-growth treatment field is checked. If treatment is noted, you are aware and have factored it in.
A certificate does not tell you whether a stone is right for you. That requires looking at the actual diamond — or working with someone who will do that on your behalf and explain what they see.
